I’m Farmer Bob but you can call me “Bob” and I run Sac Chicken (Sacramento Chickens). So why have a website that specializes in building chicken coops and raising chickens in your backyard? I think mostly becuase my family and friends just plain love raising chickens and can’t think of a negative thing about it- simple enough.

I’m about 40 now but when I was just a little guy, I would love to go to Grandma’s house in Colusa CA, mostly during Summer break. Grandma’s house was some place special for many reasons and one of the special things about it was being able to go into the backyard chicken coop and look for eggs when visiting. She had a few dozen hens and a few roosters as well that would crow (of course) every morning. As a matter of fact, my beloved grandmother lost her last name and just became “Grandma Rue” to myself, older brother, and sister. If she would call our house, mom would say “Grandma Rue is on the phone”, cards for birthdays were always signed “Grandma Rue”, short for Grandma Rooster due to association of the chickens. I never once called her by her last name, it was always Grandma Rue up to the day she left us.

When I was about 9 or 10 we built a coop and chicken run at home and got our first set of chicks. I remember even as a kid watching and laughing at how each chicken would have their own personality and funny traits. I loved all the little noises that they made as they scratched and pecked around the yard. From that point forward, I loved having chickens.

So I guess I can thank Grandma Rue, for introducing me to one of the most under appreciated animals many urban dwellers would never think of owning…but that is changing. Ask around, you would be surprised how many people now have chickens in their own backyard.

We hope you find this site informative, and a good source of information regarding raising chickens.
